 Modernization of Ndjili aerport on the way.

Infrastructure involved in the five work sites has really taken off with the coming of Chinese equipments for large-scale work which will be launched throughout the country. The modernization of Nd’jili Airport is also a part of the five work sites initiated by President Kabila. Contacted by DCI’s reporters, the head of the RVA, Ernest Ilang'Ikwa Bonkanya speaks on the matter.

DCI: Can you tell us about the new batch of material in relation to the modernization project of Nd’jili Airport?
We are very pleased with the coming of this new equipment of which a part will allow to implement the modernization project of Nd’jili airport. This material will actually allow us to begin the work planned on ground as the need to rehabilitate the airport is needed; considering the state of ageing infrastructure, including the runway and buildings.
In this specific context that we recently received a delegation of Chinese engineers which was responsible to inspect the control tower and facilities of the airport which need to be rehabilitated. At the end of this visit, the Chinese engineers have developed plans that were reviewed by mutual agreement with our technical structure. At the end of the work, the airport will have infrastructure renovated, modern, making the pride of the DRC.

DCI: What exactly is going to be done?
The work will be carried out in several stages. The first phase will involve work to be carried out on the runway. It is in a state of disrepair very advanced. He will discuss work on 4000 m long and 60 meter wide.
As the second phase, we will build a new air terminal and this will be done step by step until building a modern one by 2040, which will be the best one in Africa.

DCI: How long will last this work?
The duration of work to be carried out on the runway will extend over a six-month period and expected to be completed in January 2009. Then we will begin the work of the air terminal.
