 North Kivu : Road rehabilitation on Rutshuru - Ishasha, a way of consolidating peace

The UN secretary general’s special representative Alan Doss has launched on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 in Kisharo, rehabilitation work on the road Rutshuru-Ishasha. About sixty km long, the project is implemented by UNDP-UNOPS and funded by the Dutch government, for a total of USD 300 000.
This road will be called "the road of peace," said the UN secretary general’s special representative on the bridge Kitsharo, before cutting the symbolic blue ribbon.
Alan Doss was accompanied by the provincial Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure as well as the administrator of Rutshuru territory. All were surrounded by large local population came to applaud this initiative.
By this action, the provincial minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Kitsa Mahali said he was confident that the rehabilitation work on the Rutshuru-Ishasha road will eventually recover many unemployed young men, previously attracted by armed groups.
The UNOPS’s representative has announced that this work will actually start in 15 days. About 800 young people will be employed on the site which will last about three months.
The main tasks will be to redo the drainage system, the roadway and all works of art like the bridge of Kisharo. A maintenance system with the Office des Routes is considered by UNOPS.
During the same day, Mr. Doss has toured the road Sake-Masisi centre, 60 km long to see the evolution of rehabilitation work.
The provincial Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Kitsa Mahali said that this is an area where several signatories armed group of the commitment Act of Goma coexist.
In this connection, the UN diplomat said that the rehabilitation of this road may contribute to the restoration of peace in this part of the territory of Masisi.
